Art and Nature

Art of Dance and Nature

The COP26 Climate Conference is currently being held in Glasgow. Even though I would like to believe in mankind’s ability to heal the damage that we have inflicted on the environment, the facts do not support this belief. We cannot simply add bandaids on top of bandaids; COP26 is simply another one. Forests are being felled in constantly increasing numbers, and the pace will only grow faster in the next ten years. We must bear in mind that mankind has started a process which has resulted in the self-suffocation and self-destruction of woodlands.

Mankind has left a smoldering footprint on our planet, and mankind’s handprint has only accentuated said destruction. Our magnificent scientific advancements have been directed towards upholding the constant growth of consumer society. Even art has been degraded into a lubricant for the celebration of overconsumption. The consilience of art and science as the pillar of consumer society has a nearly imperceptible effect on our everyday lives—on our clothes, our food, and our activities.

The deep consilience of art and dance is the only way to stop this spiral of doom. Robust cooperation between art and science can mitigate the consequences of previous damages. Nature, not mankind, must be at the forefront in the deep consilience of art and science. Fortunately, there are persons with deep insight. Various people, from Chief Seattle to environmental activist Greta Thunberg, have always seen and will always see far. I am proud to have witnessed the dancer Anna Halprin becoming part of this group. Anna gave nature the spotlight, danced to the rhythm of its breath, and employed the tools of art and science. The impact of science can be found in the heart of Anna’s dance, even though her message is conveyed via the art of dance.

Tanssitaide ja luonto

Ilmastokokous COP26 Glasgowissa on meneillään.  Vaikka haluan uskoa ihmiskunnan kykyyn ratkaista elinympäristölleen aiheuttamansa vauriot, tosiasiat eivät tue tätä käsitystä.  ”Paikka paikan päälle ei enää auta. COP, COP, COP, COP…COP26 kuuluu porstuasta”. Metsää kaadetaan koko ajan ennennäkemättömällä vauhdilla. Seuraavan kymmenen vuoden aikana vauhti vain kiihtyy. Lisäksi on muistettava, että ihminen on saattanut toimillaan liikkeelle prosessin, jonka tuloksena metsä tukehtuu ja tuhoutuu itsestään.

Ihmisen jalanjälki pallollamme on ruma. Ihmisen kädenjälki on vain täydentänyt tuhoa. Tieteen huikeat saavutukset on ohjattu kulutusyhteiskunnan kasvun ylläpitämiseen. Taidekin on alistettu ylikulutusta ihannoivan yhteiskuntamallin voiteluaineeksi.

Tiedeulottuvuus on Annan tanssin ytimessä, missä sanoma pusertuu näkyväksi tanssitaiteen keinoin.

Luonto tanssii taidetta taiteen tanssiessa luonnossa.
